Hemodialysis
Dialysis is a form of blood cleaning therapy requires to be done when a person's Kidneys fails.
There are two types of dialysis available Hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis CRRT (Continuous renal replacement therapy).
Here we will focus on hemodialysis.
When the patients Kidneys fail to
Remove excess water, toxins( Uremic toxins),
Maintains normal electrolyte levels,
Unable to maintain the ph of the blood
In these patients the failed renal (kidney) function (work) is done by an external machine with a artificial dialyser ( blood filter).
In hemodialysis the patients blood is passed through the filter (dialyser), the dialyser removes the excess toxins and water from the patients blood. The filtered blood is returned to the patient and the toxins goes in the drain.
During hemodialysis not only is the patients blood filter, it is replenished with bicarbonate to correct the acid accumulated in the patients blood and body due to kidney failure.
Thus every session of hemodialysis maintains the homeostasis of the body preventing life threatening complications.
